How to brief an agricultural export consultant

By the consultancy team, Konza Tropicals Limited

A good brief saves weeks. It lets a consultant propose the right scope, team and timeline, and it protects the client from paying for work that does not address the real problem. This guide explains what to put in a brief for Konza Tropicals' consultancy team and what happens next.

Describe the context

Your organisation, the value chain and products, the country or region, and whether you are an exporter, processor, cooperative, programme, financial institution or government body. If the assignment is under a programme, name the programme framework and reporting requirements.

State the stage and the problem

Where you are now and what is blocking progress: a first shipment that has not happened, a market you cannot enter, a certification you keep failing, a processing line that is not viable, a supply chain that cannot deliver consistent quality, or an opportunity you need to assess before committing.

Define outputs and decisions

  • The deliverables you expect: an assessment, a feasibility study, an implementation plan, a market entry plan, training, buyer introductions or technical assistance.
  • The decisions the work needs to support, and who will take them.
  • Timing, including any deadlines set by a programme, a season or a buyer.
  • The budget framework, if one applies, so that scope can be matched to it.

Share constraints and information

Existing audits, certificates, business plans, market data and previous consultancy reports shorten the work and avoid repetition. Say what is confidential; information is handled under agreed confidentiality terms.

What happens next at Konza Tropicals

  • A scoping call to clarify the objective and the information available.
  • A written proposal with scope, deliverables, team, timeline and fees.
  • Delivery by our team, with field visits where needed and working sessions with yours.
  • Deliverables as agreed and a follow up point to review progress.

We do not guarantee funding, certification, licences, buyer contracts or commercial results, and we do not provide regulated legal or investment advice. Konza Tropicals is also an operating exporter; where an assignment could overlap with our trading activity, we say so and agree how to handle it.
