How to source crude avocado oil for refining

By the value addition team, Konza Tropicals Limited

Dry matter test on a Hass avocado in a Kenyan orchard

Refineries buying crude avocado oil need consistency across lots, documentation their quality team can rely on and a shipment schedule that fits their intake. This guide sets out how to source crude avocado oil from Kenya and East Africa, and how Konza Tropicals works with refinery procurement teams. Konza Tropicals supplies crude and extra virgin avocado oil in bulk, with conventional and organic options as applicable to the offered lot. Refining is carried out by the buyer's own refinery.

Define what your process needs

Start with the parameter band your refinery accepts for free fatty acid, peroxide value, moisture and impurities, and any process specific requirements such as colour or contaminant limits. Konza Tropicals agrees this band with each buyer rather than publishing standard numbers, and reports the actual values per lot on the certificate of analysis.

Samples and laboratory confirmation

Request representative samples before any contract, test them in your own laboratory and confirm fit. Agree how samples will be drawn from each lot, what retained samples are kept and how a retest is handled if a result is questioned.

Packing format and lot size

Flexitank, drums or IBCs are agreed per order to suit your intake and handling. Lot size and the number of lots per shipment are agreed against your production plan and confirmed in each offer.

Traceability and documents

  • Lot identification from fruit origin to shipment.
  • Konza Tropicals provides an internal certificate of analysis for each avocado oil lot. External laboratory testing or buyer testing can also be arranged according to agreed requirements.
  • Product and labelling information for your own compliance checks.
  • Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin where your importer requires it.
  • The preloading quality control report for the shipment.

Shipment scheduling

Crude avocado oil is produced around the harvest and supplied from production and stock. Agree a shipment schedule against your intake plan, with dates confirmed per booking; transit depends on routing and carrier schedules. Oil ships in dry containers from Mombasa on FOB, CFR or CIF terms, or EXW and FCA by arrangement.

Conventional and organic

Conventional and organic crude oil are offered as applicable to the specific lot. Organic status applies only to lots covered by valid organic certification of that supply chain, and the documentation is shared with the offer. It is never assumed for every lot.

Working with Konza Tropicals

The oil comes from Hass and Fuerte fruit grown on our own farm in Kenya and the East African orchards we manage, processed at facilities in East Africa we work with, with each lot selected, tested and released by Konza Tropicals as the contracting supplier.
