Kenyan avocado oil and macadamia for New Zealand importers

New Zealand grows its own Hass and does not admit fresh Kenyan avocados; it is a market for our oil and nuts. This page states what is available, what the importer must check with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), and how a trial order works. Regulatory notes checked 15 October 2026.

Fresh avocados

Why fresh Kenyan avocados are not offered to New Zealand

Fresh fruit may enter New Zealand only under an MPI Import Health Standard (IHS) for that fruit and country. At the time of checking, MPI lists avocado import health standards for Australia and Tonga; there is none for Kenya, and creating one requires a government-to-government risk analysis. We therefore do not quote fresh avocados for New Zealand.

Importer checklist

What the New Zealand importer must have in place

Food importer registrationCommercial food importers must be registered with MPI under the Food Act 2014 and must be able to show that imported food is safe and suitable (traceability, supplier assurance, test results).
BiosecurityProcessed plant oil and processed kernels are covered by MPI import health standards for processed plant products; raw or minimally processed nuts can carry additional conditions. The importer confirms the applicable IHS and any treatment or permit before shipment.
Food standards and labellingThe Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code applies: food name, lot, importer or distributor address, ingredients, nutrition information, allergen declaration (tree nuts), country of origin. Retail label artwork is approved by the importer.
Testing we provideBatch COA for each oil lot; aflatoxin, moisture and microbiological results for macadamia on request; third-party laboratory testing at the buyer's chosen frequency.
DutiesNew Zealand applies low or zero tariffs to most edible oils and nuts, but classification is product-specific; the importer confirms the rate with New Zealand Customs. We do not assert duty-free treatment.
DocumentsCommercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, COA, and the processing declarations the IHS requires.

Logistics

Indicative transit from Mombasa

Sea freightMombasa to Auckland, Tauranga or Lyttelton is typically 30 to 45 days port to port with transhipment in Asia or Australia; door delivery adds clearance and inland time. Schedules quoted per shipment.
